Baccarat: how it works

The rules in plain words, with pictures: what the cards are worth, how a hand is dealt, and why the banker bet is the one to make.

How baccarat works

Baccarat is a guessing game with cards. Two hands are dealt, one called Player and one called Banker, and you bet on which will end up closer to 9. You don’t play either hand: the dealer deals both by fixed rules, so there is nothing to decide once your bet is down.

PLAYER7♣♣2♦♦9 BANKERK♠♠6♥♥6 €10PLAYERpays 1 to 1TIEpays 8 to 1BANKERpays 0.95 to 1 A natural 9 beats 6: Player wins
Two hands, three bets: Player, Banker or a Tie. Here the Player’s 7 and 2 make a natural 9, so a bet on Player wins.

What the cards are worth

A♠♠1The ace2♣♣5♦♦9♠♠2 to 9The number on the card10♥♥J♣♣Q♦♦K♠♠010, J, Q and K7♣♣8♥♥ = 155the hand’s value
Only the last digit of the total counts, so a hand is always worth 0 to 9.

Add up the cards and keep only the last digit: 7 and 8 make 15, which counts as 5. A hand of 8 or 9 from the first two cards is called a natural and wins straight away, unless the other hand has one too.

A round, step by step

  1. Place your betPut your chips on Player, Banker or Tie before the deal.
  2. Two cards eachThe dealer deals two cards to Player and two to Banker, face up.
  3. Maybe a third cardFixed rules decide whether either hand gets one more card. You don’t do anything: the dealer, or the game, applies them.
  4. Closest to 9 winsWinning bets are paid. If it is a tie, bets on Player and Banker are given back.

When a third card is dealt

You never need to remember these: the dealer follows them for you. They are here so the deal makes sense. If either hand has a natural 8 or 9, nobody draws. Otherwise the Player hand draws on 0 to 5 and stands on 6 or 7. The Banker then draws by this table:

Banker hasBanker draws when the Player’s third card is
0, 1 or 2Any card, or when the Player stood
3Anything but an 8
42 to 7
54 to 7
66 or 7
7Never: Banker stands

What each bet pays

BetPaysOn a €10 betHouse edge
Banker0.95 to 1You win €9.501.06%
Player1 to 1You win €101.24%
Tie8 to 1You win €8014.4%

Banker wins a little more often than Player, so the casino keeps 5% of Banker wins. Even so, Banker is the cheapest bet on the table. No commission tables pay Banker in full but only half when it wins with 6.

Versions and their odds

Punto bancoThe classic: fixed rules decide every card1.06% on banker
No commission baccaratA banker win on 6 pays halfabout 1.46% on banker
Speed baccarat (live)Faster rounds, the same rules1.06% on banker
Dragon TigerOne card each; the higher card winsabout 3.7%

Tips that make a difference

  • Bet on the banker: it wins slightly more often
  • Skip the tie bet: its house edge is over 14%
  • Ignore the scoreboards: past hands don’t predict the next one
  • Try no commission tables if you prefer round payouts

Is it legal, and is it taxed?

Irish players can play at licensed online casinos. The Gambling Regulation Act 2024 set up the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland, which is taking over licensing; until its licences cover online casinos fully, most sites that accept Irish players are licensed in Malta or the UK. We name the licence on every casino we list.

No tax on winnings. Gambling winnings are not taxed for players in Ireland today, though the rules can change.

Staying in control

52 of the 54 casinos here let you close your account for a while, and 28 let you set deposit limits. Each review lists the tools a casino has. Set them up before you need them.

  • Set a deposit limit when you open the account, if the casino has one
  • Decide how long you will play before you start
  • Never chase a loss with a bigger deposit
  • Free, confidential help: the national helpline on 1800 936 725, every day. More ways to stay in control

Questions about baccarat

What is the best bet in baccarat?

The banker bet, with a 1.06% house edge even after the 5% commission.

Why is there commission on banker bets?

Because the banker hand wins slightly more often; the 5% keeps the edge with the house.

Is the tie bet worth it?

No. It pays 8 to 1 but carries a house edge of over 14%.
