Free bets: what to know

How to claim them, and the four or five lines of the terms that decide whether they are worth it.

How to claim a free bet

The terms that decide what it is worth

Wagering
How many times you must bet the bonus or its winnings before you can withdraw. €10 at 35x means €350 in bets.
Maximum win
A cap on what the bonus can pay out, common on no deposit offers and free spins.
Maximum bet
The largest stake allowed while a bonus is active, usually €5. A bigger bet can cost you the bonus.
Time limit
Days you have to use the bonus and finish the wagering. Seven is fair; 48 hours rarely is.
Game weighting
How much each game counts towards wagering. Slots usually count 100%, table and live games 10% or nothing.

What each term means in practice, with a calculator for what a bonus is worth: bonus terms in plain words. Other words you’ll meet are in the casino glossary.

Free bets: the good and the bad

The good

  • Winnings paid in cash, usually without wagering
  • Simple terms
  • Good if you bet on sport anyway

The bad

  • The free bet stake is not returned
  • Minimum odds rules
  • Sport only at most casinos

Is it legal, and is it taxed?

Irish players can play at licensed online casinos. The Gambling Regulation Act 2024 set up the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland, which is taking over licensing; until its licences cover online casinos fully, most sites that accept Irish players are licensed in Malta or the UK. We name the licence on every casino we list.

No tax on winnings. Gambling winnings are not taxed for players in Ireland today, though the rules can change.

Staying in control

Most casinos let you set limits and close your account for a while; each review lists the tools a casino has. Set them up before you need them.

  • Set a deposit limit when you open the account, if the casino has one
  • Decide how long you will play before you start
  • Never chase a loss with a bigger deposit
  • Free, confidential help: the national helpline on 1800 936 725, every day. More ways to stay in control

Questions about free bets

Is the stake of a free bet returned?

No. A €10 free bet at evens pays €10, not €20.

Do free bets have wagering?

Usually not: the winnings are cash. Check the terms all the same.

Can I use a free bet in the casino?

Rarely. Most free bets are for the sportsbook only.
